Natalia MakarovaNatalia Makarova (Natalia Romanovna Makarova) leyenda viva.

Prima ballerina rusa nacionalizada estadounidense, nace el 21 de noviembre de 1940 en Leningrado (hoy San Petersburgo) y se forma en la escuela Vaganova de Leningrado desde los 13 años. En 1956 entra a formar parte del Ballet Kirov y en 1960 la nombran primera bailarina.

Natalia Makarova su historia: Pidió asilo político durante una gira por el Reino Unido.

Nos puede parecer de película, recordemos la maravillosa «Noches de Sol» con Mikhail Baryshnikov, pero es una historia real, en 1970 Makarova durante una gira con el Kirov solicita asilo político en Londres.

A partir de ahí su primer encuentro con otra compañía de ballet fue con el American Ballet con el cual adaptó para su debut «Giselle».

Dos años después en 1972 se incorporó al Royal Ballet en Londres, cuyo repertorio incluía «Les Sylphides», «Manon», «La canción de la tierra», «Concerto», «Cinderella», «Serenade», «Syncopations» y «Les Biches», entre otras. Fue aclamada principalmente por «El lago de los cisnes» y «Giselle».

Makarova vuelve a la Unión Soviética 19 años después en 1989 y se convierte en la primera artista exiliada que es invitada a bailar de nuevo en su país de origen. Lo hace bailando con el Kirov Ballet donde comenzó su espectacular carrera. No os perdáis la película documental «Makarova Returns» que os dejamos aquí enlazada:

Natalia Makarova destaca por sus interpretaciones en los ballets clásicos de repertorio como Giselle, El lago de los cisnes y La bella durmiente por las que es galardonada con la Medalla de Oro en el Festival de Ballet de Varna, Bulgaria, en 1965 y con el Anna Pavlova Award de París en 1970. 

También destaca en repertorio de grandes coreógrafos contemporáneos como MacMillan, Robbins, Balanchine, Ashton, Tudor, Bejart, Petit, Neumeier, Tetley and Cranko. Muchos de los ballets y pasos a dos de estos coreógrafos fueron creados para ella:

Natalia Makarova icono balletístico y leyenda, se encontraba en España cuando escribimos este artículo con motivo del inolvidable estreno del ya desaparecido Corella Ballet el 4 de septiembre del 2008 en el Teatro Real de Madrid con «La Bayadera».

Producción La bayadera que ya había coreografiado en 1980 para el American Ballet reconstruyendo, por primera vez desde 1919, el último acto a partir del trabajo de Marius Petipa.

Aquel 4 de septiembre presentaba su coreografía para la compañía de Angel Corella a quién conoció en 1994 cuando formaba parte del jurado del VI Concurso Internacional del Ballet de París, donde Corella ganó la Medalla de Oro.

No solo leyenda como bailarina sino también dirigiendo producciones completas para los ballets más importantes del mundo.

De la rueda de prensa se recogen estas palabras: «Ángel se descubrió a sí mismo, tarde o temprano habría salido. Probablemente yo lo ayudé al principio, en la competición de París; llamé al director del American Ballet y le dije: ¡tienes que contratarlo; es un bailarín increíble! Luego me dio las gracias. Y mira lo lejos que llegó Ángel», explica.

De España recuerda haber bailado en una gran gala ante la entonces Princesa Sofía –. «Estará siempre en mi memoria, porque al día siguiente volaba para bailar ‘Manon’ -mi papel favorito- en el Covent Garden de Londres. El avión iba con retraso, yo iba llorando, dejé mis maletas, salté del tren que cogí en el aeropuerto porque iba en otra dirección… Llegué, y fue la mejor función de mi vida», rememora entre risas.

Transmite respeto, admiración y autoridad entre los bailarines del Corella Ballet Castilla y León, a quienes imparte instrucciones mientras ensayan bajo su supervisión en los estudios de La Granja.

«La Bayadera» es una obra maestra y trato de no tocarla, sólo añado más espiritualidad, significado y transcendencia. No sólo enseño los pasos», comenta Makarova.

«Busco la armonía. Mi escuela es la armonía y es muy agradable trabajar con bailares jóvenes; trabajan todo el día, aprendiendo nuevos pasos, un nuevo ballet… demasiada información, pero ellos no dejan de trabajar cuando dejan el estudio, para poder asimilar todo para el día siguiente», se congratula una mujer con fama de ser muy, muy exigente.

Sobre el momento que vive su arte, responde: «¡Qué momento no es bueno para la danza!». Llama la atención lo adelantada que era a su época, de las primeras bailarinas que se tiene constancia que incorporan pilates a su rutina de trabajo, en estas imágenes la veis trabajando en la máquina «cadillac» que utilizaba para mejorar su técnica de brazos por ejemplo en El lago de los cisnes en otras cosas.
